ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team welcomed Canisius to Tucker Field for the second three-game series this season. GW exacted revenge on the Golden Griffins, who took two out of three games in the first series, by sweeping them in two contests during Friday's doubleheader. GW won game one, 7-3, and secured a close second contest, 4-3.
GAME ONE
Canisius, who entered the day 6-9 on the season, pounced on GW lefty Michael Foltz with three runs in the first inning. Despite the early damage, those would be the only runs Foltz would surrender for the rest of his outing. GW got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, scoring two runs off an RBI double from Charlie Rogan Later in the inning, Robby Wacker knotted the game when he reached first via a fielding error from Canisius' shortstop.
An inning later in the fifth, GW took its first lead of the game when Robbie Lavey ripped a single down the left field like to score Steve DiTomaso. GW kept its scoring run going in the sixth, adding three more runs, bringing the total to seven unanswered across three innings. McGwire Tuffy got the inning started when he shot a single through the left side to score Ellis Schwartz. DiTomaso made the game 6-3 off an RBI single to third base, then Lavey scored the GW Revs final of the game via a single through the left side. With his third hit of the contest, DiTomaso placed himself in a tie for ninth all-time in program history for career hits. DiTomaso has 249 hits in his five-year career, tying him with Matt Krimmel '02 and Bobby Campbell '17 for ninth-most in program history.
Following Foltz's departure at the end of the sixth inning, Andrew Cutler took the mound in relief for GW. Cutler fired two scoreless innings, only allowing one hit on the day, to preserve GW's four-run advantage. In the ninth inning, head coach Gregg Ritchie turned to one of his most reliable arms this season in Brandon Siegenthaler to finish the job. Siegenthaler didn't disappoint, sitting the Golden Griffins down in order to secure the win. Foltz earns the win for the Revolutionaries, moving him to 3-1 on the season.
Offensively, the Buff & Blue were led by DiTomaso, who finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Lavey went 2-for-3 from the dish with two RBI, while Rogan finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Nick Mullen recorded a 2-for-3 line with two runs scored out of GW's nine-hole, while Schwartz and Tuffy each added a hit.
GAME TWO
Teddy Brennan, the reigning Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, picked up right where he left off for the Buff & Blue. Despite tossing a high volume of pitches, Brennan was effective, keeping Canisius off the scoreboard for the first five innings of the game. GW gave Brennan some run support in the fourth when Bryan Belo dropped a bunt single down to the pitcher. Canisius' pitcher threw the ball past the first baseman, allowing Rogan to round third and score for GW.
In the sixth, Brennan allowed Canisius' first two batters to reach successfully before being pulled for Brayden Kurtz. Kurtz managed to minimize the damage and only allowed one runner to come around and score, which was ultimately charged to Brennan. Brennan finished the day with five-plus innings pitched, one earned run and seven strikeouts for GW. In the bottom half of the sixth, GW found the scoreboard again when Belo hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Young to give GW a 2-1 lead. Later in the eighth, the Revolutionaries added two more runs off a single from Mullen. Canisius wouldn't go away quietly in the ninth, seeing its first four batters reach safely and two coming around to score. With runners on first and second and no outs, Kurtz clutched up and sat the next three batters down to secure the win and sweep Canisius in the doubleheader.
Kurtz picked up the win for GW, moving him to 2-2 this season and finishing the day with four innings pitched in relief, two earned runs allowed and six total strikeouts. Offensively, Belo led GW with a 3-for-3 effort. Below also recorded an RBI and a run scored. Mullen added a hit and two RBI, while Wacker, Rogan and Young all finished with one hit and one run apiece. GW's pitching staff held Canisius scoreless for 15 straight innings across the two games, flexing its muscles within the friendly confines of Barcroft Park.
GW looks for the series sweep and the season series win on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Live coverage of the contest will be available on GWsports.com.
