WASHINGTON – The George Washington baseball team welcomes Canisius to Tucker Field for the second weekend series of the season. GW previously hosted the Golden Griffins from March 8-10, dropping two out of three contests to the visitors. This weekend's series opens with a doubleheader on Friday with first pitch scheduled for the opener at 12:30 p.m. After the team's take Saturday off from competition, Sunday's series finale is set for 12:00 p.m. Friday's contests can be seen on ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT
GW picked up a 7-4 road victory over Towson on Wednesday night, the team's fourth win in five games. The Revolutionaries benefited from stellar pitching from starter Jarrett Korson who tossed five shutout innings. Despite the spectacular show, Korson's outing didn't result in a win after the Tigers tied the game at four in the seventh inning. GW's offense came alive in the final two innings, scoring three unanswered runs to secure the 7-4 victory. Nick Mullen got things started for the Buff & Blue in the eighth with a solo home run, his second of the season, before GW added two more runs in the ninth inning. Charlie Rogan doubled to right field to score Steve DiTomaso for GW's first tally of the frame, then Robby Wacker followed it up with a double of his own to bring around Alexander Wright. GW has scored at least six runs in 12 games this season, getting great production on the offensive side of the plate.
DITOMASO KEEPS CLIMBING
Following a three-hit performance at Towson on Wednesday, DiTomaso now has 246 career hits during his five-year career with the Buff & Blue. DiTomaso needs just three more hits to crack the program's top-10 in the category, putting himself in a tie for ninth with Matt Krimmel '02 and Bobby Campbell '17 with 249. Tom Zebroski '10 holds the GW program record for hits with 299, meaning DiTomaso needs just 53 more base knocks to equal the benchmark. DiTomaso is a career .330 hitter and is currently slashing at a .315 average in 2024.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GRIFFINS
Canisius enters the weekend 6-9 overall after dropping two of three games to Liberty last weekend. The three-game set against the Flames are the only contests Canisius has played since facing GW earlier this month. The Golden Griffins were outscored 22-14 in the three games against Liberty but managed to pick up a 4-0 shutout win in the series-opener. Canisius is led by head coach Matt Mazurek who's in his seventh season with the program. Mazurek has an overall record of 143-137-2 with the Golden Griffins, leading the program to a 30-win season in 2018, his first with the team.
Offensively, Canisius is led by Jackson Strong who's hitting .429 on the year. Strong has a team-high 24 total hits and 12 RBI, while also adding four home runs and two doubles. Strong boasts a .712 slugging percentage and a .536 on-base percentage. Strong bats a solid .250 (4-for-16) against lefties, but makes his living off righties, hitting a monster .500 (20-for-40). Aside from Strong, no other Canisius batter is above the .300 threshold. Mike DeStefano is second-best on the team with a .288 average on 19 hits, while Trent Rumley holds an identical .288 average on 17 hits. Rumley has 10 RBI on the year to go along with a team-high four doubles, while DeStefano has three doubles and five RBI this season.
On the mound, Canisius is led by Tom Peltier who holds a 1.93 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched. Peltier has a team-high 25 strikeouts this season and has allowed four earned runs in total. He holds a 2-0 record on the mound and has two saves this season. Morin Felix has also been solid for the Golden Griffins, leading the team with three wins this year. He's made four starts and has an ERA of 3.00. Felix has 16 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched, while allowing seven earned runs.
