The 1732 Circle Explained
The university’s namesake, George Washington, was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, on February 22, 1732. So it seemed fitting that we should draw our name from that historic birth date. And the 1732 Circle’s motto, “Deeds, not words,” was George Washington’s credo. In a letter written by his step-granddaughter, Nelly Custis-Lewis, she writes that Washington “always rose before the sun and remained in his library until called to breakfast…He was not one of those who act or pray, "that they may be seen of men" [Matthew 6:5]. He communed with his God in secret. His mottos were, "Deeds, not Words"; and, "For God and my Country."
