Volleyball Drops a Pair at Classic City Clash

ATHENS, Ga. - GW volleyball opened its season on Friday in SEC country, falling in a pair of matches at Stegeman Coliseum to Furman and host Georgia.

The season began with a five-set thriller that ultimately saw the Revolutionaries cede a 2-1 lead and fall in five sets to the Paladins.
GW opened the match with a flawless first set, hitting .391 as a team without an error. The Buff & Blue notched a match-high 16 kills while hitting .324 in the third-set win as well.
Alexis Rodriguez led the attack with 16 kills and added 12 digs and three blocks, while Cayla Cogan added 12 and swung .300. All-Conference setter Abby Markworth dished out 38 assists along with 17 digs for a double-double. Lydia Zeng led GW with 20 digs and Tessa De Albergaria added 11 of her own.
The Paladins out-hit GW, .176 to .154, and held advantages in kills (56-51), aces (5-4) and assists (54-47). The Buff & Blue tallied 11 blocks and 76 digs in the match.
Georgia 3, GW 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-20)

The host Bulldogs got the better of GW in the nightcap, leading through a majority of the three sets to earn the sweep.
Cogan paced the Buff & Blue with seven kills and Markworth added 19 assists and four digs.
Georgia out-hit GW .180 to .077, and led in every statistical category, including kills (35-28), assists (33-25), aces (5-4), digs (35-28) and blocks (6-3).
