George Washington University Athletics
HONORED & RETIRED JERSEYS

Prior to the start of the 2025-26 seasons, GW began a new tradition in which individuals can be recognized as all-time legends of George Washington Athletics by honoring or retiring their jerseys in its athletics venues. This special honor for student-athletes and coaches who have achieved extraordinary athletic accomplishments during their careers at GW, allows for jerseys to be retired or honored, with the latter recognition enabling the number to remain in circulation. Before the process was formalized, only softball's Elana Meyers Taylor, the most decorated U.S. female athlete in Winter Olympics history, has had her jersey retired. A banner recognizing basketball titan Red Auerbach also hung in the Smith Center rafters.
A committee meets yearly to consider the next GW greats who might receive this highest of honors.
