Men's Basketball to Host Joe Holup Jersey Recognition on Nov. 15

WASHINGTON - One of the greatest ever to don the Buff & Blue, Joe Holup will have his #16 hung in the Smith Center at halftime of the men's basketball contest vs. Old Dominion on Nov. 15. Tickets are available through GWsports.com/tickets.
A GW Hall of Famer in the class of 1977, Holup scored 2,226 points and accumulated 2,030 rebounds in his GW career. He holds the GW career records in scoring average (21.4), made field goals (756), rebounds, and rebounding average (19.5), and his 2,226 career points are still the second-most in program history. Holup is one of just two players in NCAA history with more than 2,000 career points and 2,000 career rebounds (with La Salle's Tom Gola).
He also holds the top three rebounding seasons in program history and GW single-game records for points (49), free throws (25) and made field goals (18). During his freshman and senior years, Holup led the team in scoring, including records of 23-3 and 24-6. In his time, Holup also led the nation in field goal percentage two of his four seasons and in rebounding his senior year.
Holup was a four time first-team All-Southern Conference honoree and a third team AP All-American as a senior. Alongside his brother John, the duo helped GW secure its first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1954.
After graduation, Holup was the fifth overall selection by the NBA's Syracuse Nationals (now the Philadelphia 76ers), remaining the highest draft choice and one of just two first-round selections in program history.
Holup, who passed away in 1998, will be represented by members of his family during the special recognition at halftime.
