Water Polo Completes Navy Open With 3-2 Record in Winning Weekend

GW water polo made the familiar trip to Annapolis on Labor Day Weekend for the Navy Open, testing itself against another strong slate of national competition in preparation for MAWPC play. The Revolutionaries took three of five games at Lejeune Hall to move above .500 on the young season at 5-4.

GW 11, No. 12 Princeton 23
GW faced off against its third ranked opponent of the season to begin the Navy Open on Friday night, and despite hanging with the Tigers early, Princeton dominated the second and third quarters to put the game out of reach for the Revolutionaries. GW and Princeton were tied at 5-5 after one quarter, but a 6-2 second quarter and 8-3 third quarter in favor of the Tigers created too big of a gap for GW to overcome.

GW 14, (RV) LIU 13
Saturday's first match was a display of back-and-forth action between the Revolutionaries and Sharks, as neither team held more than a three-goal advantage at any point in the game. GW scored first but was then hit with four straight goals from LIU to go down 4-1 in the first. GW rallied and tied the game at six by halftime, before taking a lead midway through the third quarter which it never relinquished.

GW 18, Iona 10
Game two Saturday was all Buff and Blue from the start, as the Revolutionaries rattled off five-straight scores to start the game, closing the first quarter at 8-1 and bringing a 12-5 lead into half. GW managed the clock and its lead effectively in the second period on its way to the 18-10 victory over Iona.

GW 23, Chapman 11

The Buff and Blue wasted no time asserting itself against Chapman early on Sunday, sprinting out to an 8-3 lead after one. A balanced attack that 12 different players score held Chapman at bay throughout the contest, winning all four quarters to cruise to the easy win and allow for some rest, which would be much needed in the Open's finale.

GW 18, (RV) Air Force 19 (OT)

The game of the weekend needed extra time to decide it as neither side relented in regulation. GW dug out of a 6-3 deficit after one to be within a goal, 10-9, at halftime, before equaling matters going into the fourth. Reigning MAWPC Player of the Week Konstantinos Kapragkos (five goals) and junior attacker Antonio Florena (six goals) gave GW a chance to make it a 4-1 weekend with a pair of wins against teams receiving votes in the national polls, but a pair of Air Force goals to George Washington's one in extra time gave the win to the Falcons.

GW heads to the Salem Invitational in Bridgeport, West Virginia next weekend for a quartet of games. The Revolutionaries take on Fresno Pacific and Gannon on Saturday followed by Johns Hopkins and host Salem on Sunday looking to continue a successful start to the 2026 campaign.
