Water Polo Stays Hot in Non-Conference Play with 4-0 Record at Salem Invite

(RV) GW water polo completed a 4-0 weekend at the Salem Invitational this weekend, downing Fresno Pacific, (RV) Gannon, No. 4 (D-III) Johns Hopkins and Salem. The Revolutionaries moved to 8-4 overall as they near the end of non-conference play.Â
(RV) GW 19, Fresno Pacific 11
GW got the weekend rolling with a 19-11 win over Fresno Pacific. The Revolutionaries carried a narrow 10-8 lead into halftime, but began to exert their defensive dominance in the second half, limiting FPU to just three scores in the final 16 minutes while pulling away on the offensive end. GW's all-time record vs. Fresno Pacific improved to 7-0. Â
Four Revolutionaries finished with multiple scores: Yam Kabakov (5 goals), Konstantinos Kapragkos (4 goals), Antonio Florena (2 goals) and Joseph McCreary (2 goals). Goalkeeper Solt Horvath made nine saves to help pick up the sixth win of his rookie season.
(RV) GW 15, (RV) Gannon 8
The Revolutionaries needed a quarter to find their footing against Gannon, but once they did there was no turning back. Down 4-2 in the second quarter, GW rattled off seven straight goals to take control of the match. From there, GW managed the clock and ball effectively to improve its all-time record over Gannon to 18-1.
Kapragkos (4 goals, 2 assists), Kabakov (3 goals, 2 assists), Gabrielle Molfino (2 goals, 2 assists), and Nelson (2 goals, 1 assist) all enjoyed multi-point outings, while Horvath blocked a weekend-high 11 shots and had five steals.Â
(RV) GW 10, No. 4 (D-III) Johns Hopkins 8
GW opened play Sunday with a defensive battle against Johns Hopkins, and in a similar script from Saturday's nightcap vs. Gannon, the Revolutionaries' endurance was the difference as they held the edge in play in the second half. Tied at 4-4 after 16 minutes, the Buff & Blue outpaced the Blue Jays, 3-2, in the third and fourth quarters to secure the 10-8 win, GW's 23rd consecutive win over Johns Hopkins. Â
Kapragkos led GW's offense with four goals, followed by Kabakov with three goals and Austin Nelson with one goal and two assists. Horvath finished with nine saves on 16 shots on goal.
(RV) GW 16, Salem 10
After going down 5-2 early to the host Salem Tigers, GW once again found their legs in the second to take a 7-6 lead into halftime. The second half brought more success the Revolutionaries' way, outscoring the home side 9-4 and easing into the 16-10 win, winning their 13th consecutive match vs. Salem dating back to 2014.
Nelson led GW in points with three goals and four assists in the weekend finale, followed by Kapragkos with five goals and one assist. Horvath made 10 saves to bring his weekend total to 39.

GW plays its final match of September on Saturday, Sept. 19 in a rematch vs. Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.Â
