WASHINGTON — GW Athletics will honor the most decorated volleyball player in its program history when it retires Svetlana Vtyurina's jersey in a special ceremony on Friday, Nov. 14, at the Charles E. Smith Center.
The celebration will take place in between the second and third sets of GW's home match against Duquesne, with the evening's first serve scheduled for 6 p.m.
Vtyurina, a four-year standout from 1992 to 1995, is widely regarded as one of the most dominant athletes to ever wear the Buff & Blue. A 6-foot-4 outside hitter, she remains the only volleyball All-American in program history, earning national recognition from the AVCA in 1994.
To this day, Vtyurina owns two NCAA records: most kills in a match (56) and most kills in a career (3,043) - accolades unlikely to be surpassed due to changes in the collegiate volleyball's rally scoring format. She is also the only student-athlete in A-10 history to be named Player of the Year as both a first-year and a senior, and the only GW athlete to hold all-time NCAA records in two statistical categories.
Admission is free for all looking to attend the match, and fans are encouraged to check GWsports.com for further details closer to the match and ceremony.
