Water Polo Finishes West-Coast Trip at 2-2

(RV) GW water polo closed its west-coast trip with a 2-2 record. The Revolutionaries downed Biola and No. 3 (D-III) Redlands, while falling to No. 13 (T) UC Irvine and No. 16 Loyola Marymount.

(RV) GW 16, Biola 13
The Revolutionaries opened their season with a 16-13 win over Biola, marking the fourth consecutive season that GW won its opening game. The Revolutionaries jumped ahead quickly, blanking Biola 3-0 in the first quarter on their way to leading 7-3 at the midway point. Both offenses started clicking in the second half, as each team netted five goals in the third. GW kept the Eagles at bay in the final eight minutes, strutting to its 16-13 victory.

First-year goalkeeper Solt Horvath made his first career start in net, making seven saves in his college debut which included a shutout in his first quarter. GW was led offensively by junior attackers Antonio Florena (five goals, two assists) and Yam Kabakov (three goals, two assists). Sophomore attacker Austin Nelson dished out a team-high four assists.

(RV) GW 9, No. 13 UC Irvine 13
A more difficult opponent awaited GW in Friday's finale as the host Anteaters came in as the preseason 13th-ranked team in college water polo. A slow start put the Revolutionaries behind early, trailing 9-5 at halftime. GW battled to get within striking distance of UC Irvine, closing the gap to two midway through the third quarter, but the experienced home side managed the game and clock on their way to the 13-9 victory.

Andrea Forno paced GW with three goals and four exclusions drawn, while Florena passed a team-high four assists.

(RV) GW 12, No. 3 (D-III) Redlands 11
The Revolutionaries were tested in Saturday's opener by one of the top D-III teams in the nation. After trailing early, GW came back to level the game at the end of the third quarter. As the match came down to the wire, with the teams tied at 11-11 with under a minute remaining, GW leaned on newcomer Konstantinos Kapragkos, who netted the game winner with 46 seconds remaining.

Kapragkos led the way vs. Redlands, scoring or assisting on over half of GW's goals (five goals, two assists). Nelson also played a big part in the attack with four assists, while Horvath had a weekend-high 14 saves.

(RV) GW 12, No. 16 Loyola Marymount 15
GW had a quicker start vs. its second ranked opponent of the weekend, going blow-for-blow vs. Loyola Marymount in the first half. The Lions brought a slight edge over the Revolutionaries at halftime, leading 7-6, but a two-goal advantage in the third quarter created separation and a hole for GW that it was unable to climb out of, eventually falling 15-12.

Kapragkos and Forno each finished with a team-high three goals, while four players collected one goal and one assist (Kabakov, Gabriele Molfino, Florena, Antonio Ferneini).

GW returns to D.C. before playing five games at Navy over Labor Day weekend. GW will face Princeton on Friday (6 p.m.), LIU (11 a.m.) and Iona (3 p.m.) on Saturday, and finishes with games vs. Chapman (11 a.m.) and Air Force (5 p.m.) on Sunday.
