Baseball Falls Late to Richmond

In a back-and-forth affair, the George Washington baseball team fell late to host Richmond on Friday afternoon, 8-5. GW drops to 18-30 overall and 9-16 in Atlantic 10 matchups.

GW found the scoreboard in the top of the first, using an RBI double to left field from Cristino Tufano to score Jack Kent. The lead was short-lived, however, as Richmond used a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to take its first advantage of the ballgame.

Charlie Walsh drew the Revolutionaries back to even in the fourth, scoring Robbie Lavey on an RBI groundout to the shortstop. Despite having an additional runner in scoring position at third base, GW wasn't able to recapture the lead in the middle innings.

The Spiders jumped ahead again in the fifth, using an RBI single to take a 3-2 lead, but it didn't take long for GW to answer back on an RBI single from Walsh in the sixth, scoring Robbie Lavey from second base.

As in previous innings, Richmond had an immediate answer for GW's run with one of their own. A solo home run in the bottom of the sixth put the Spiders back ahead, 4-3, but the GW Revs' bats had another answer with two runs of their own in the seventh to take a 5-4 edge. Michael Bravette plated GW's first of the frame, while Tufano drove in the second, both coming on RBI singles.

From there, it was all Richmond as the Spiders tied the game up at five in the home half of the seventh and tacked on three more runs in the eighth to secure victory.

Max Haug earned the start for GW, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing four earned runs. Jasper Nadel was charged with the loss, dropping him to 2-1, after allowing three runs in 0.2 innings of work.

GW and the Spiders return to action for game two tomorrow, with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
