ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team completed a series sweep over Canisius on Sunday afternoon, trouncing the Golden Griffins, 9-1, to win its fourth-straight contest. The victory also secured the season-series victory for GW, winning four out of six contests between the schools.
GW got the offense going early, tallying two runs in the first frame to grab the early lead. Buff & Blue starter Graham Jeffries navigated an early jam, seeing Canisius' first two runners reach base successfully. With help from a 5-4-3 double play, Jeffries escaped the first with no damage. In the bottom of the inning, Tim Nicholson drove in the first run of the game off an RBI single to left field. GW's second run came via a deep RBI double to right field from Charlie Rogan, his first of two hits on the day.
An inning later, GW doubled its lead with two more runs. The first came off an RBI single to center field from Sam Gates, while the second was an RBI single through the right side from Steve DiTomaso. DiTomaso's single was a historic one, giving him 250 career hits with GW and moving him into eighth place on the program's all-time hits list.
After Canisius added a run in the top of the third, GW immediately answered with a run of their own. Rogan again was the culprit, ripping a single through the left side to score Nicholson. In the fourth, GW got three more runs with the first coming off a two-RBI single from Brett Young. Nicholson gave GW its eighth run of the game one batter later when his single deflected off the pitcher to score Young.
Jeffries' concluded his outing after the fifth inning, tossing three strikeouts and only allowing the one earned run. Jeffries exited with an 8-1 lead and ultimately picked up the win on the mound, moving him to 3-0 on the season. He only allowed two total hits on the day and walked four batters. Jarrett Korson entered in relief for the Revolutionaries and picked up right where Jeffries left off. Korson tossed three shutout innings, only allowing one hit and striking out two batters. The outing was part of a stellar week for Korson where he threw a combined eight shutout innings and only allowed three hits including his Wednesday start at Towson.
During Korson's appearance, GW picked up its final run of the contest in the seventh inning. McGwire Tuffy grounded out to first base, scoring Bryan Belo from third to give GW the 9-1 lead. Entering the ninth, GW turned to righty Benny Wilson to nail down the win. Wilson tossed a scoreless ninth inning, only allowing one base runner off a hit by pitch to seal the victory. Felix Morin was charged with the loss for Canisius, his first of the season moving him to 3-1 overall.
Offensively, GW was paced by Gates who racked up four hits, three runs scored and an RBI. DiTomaso and Nicholson both registered three hits each. Nicholson chipped in two RBI and two runs scored, while DiTomaso added an RBI and a run. Young and Rogan both added two hits apiece, while Ellis Schwartz finished his day with one hit.
The Revolutionaries are back in action on Wednesday when they welcome Towson to Tucker Field. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. in Arlington, Va. Live coverage will be available on ESPN+.
