Baseball Drops Thriller to Towson

ARLINGTON, Va. – Despite a furious ninth-inning comeback attempt, the George Washington baseball team fell in non-conference action to Towson on Wednesday evening, 8-7.
After a 50-minute weather delay pushed back the start of the contest, the Tigers got the scoring started with three runs in the second inning. Later in the frame, GW answered with a run of its own via a solo blast from Charlie Rogan over the scoreboard in right center field. The homer was Rogan's second of the season and cut the deficit to 3-1. In the third inning, Towson added three more runs, highlighted by a two-RBI double down the left field line by Taye Robinson. Following three runs from the Tigers, GW was able to get one back of their own, this time off a fielder's choice from Rogan that scored Steve DiTomaso from third base.
Neither team tallied another run until the eighth inning when Towson added two more to its lead. In the bottom of the eighth, GW got a run back when Brett Young drew a bases loaded walk. McGwire Tuffy scored on the play, but GW was ultimately unable to plate any more runs despite threatening.
After Brayden Kurtz worked a scoreless ninth inning, GW managed to load the bases with only one out in the frame. The Buff & Blue got its first run of the ninth when Nick Mullen drew an RBI walk, then scored two more runs on the next batter when Sam Gates doubled down the right field line to score Tuffy and Ellis Schwartz. Gates ball smashed off the bat, nearly clearing the fence for the game-tying grand slam, but ultimately bounced off the wall to score only two Revolutionaries. One batter later, DiTomaso flied out to left field, the second out of the inning. Towson chose to intentionally walk Brett Young to load the bases, bringing up first-year Robbie Lavey to the plate with the game on the line. Lavey put together a phenomenal at-bat, working a walk in seven pitches to bring home GW's seventh run of the day, making the score 8-7. With a chance to go home as the hero, Rogan stepped to the plate after Lavey. Despite his best efforts, Rogan was sat down swinging to seal the victory for Towson.
The loss snaps GW's four-game winning streak and was just the team's second loss in nine games. Tyler Blankenship earned the start for GW on the mound and was ultimately charged with the loss, moving him to 1-2 on the season. Ryder Jeske tallied the win for Towson, moving him to 1-1 on the year, while Justin Rebok secured his third save of the season.
GW returns to action on Friday, opening Atlantic 10 play against St. Bonaventure at Tucker Field. The contest is slated for 3:00 p.m. and will open a three-game series that extends into Saturday and Sunday. Live stats for all three contests will be available on GWsports.com, while Saturday's game will be carried live on ESPN+.
