Baseball Tops St. Bonaventure in A-10 Opener
3/29/2024 8:55:00 PM | Baseball
GW tallied the first run of the day in the second, an RBI single from Sam Gates to right center to bring home Steve DiTomaso. After the Bonnies recorded three runs in the third off start Michael Foltz, the Buff & Blue got all three back in the bottom half of the inning. The scoring outburst was started off by Tim Nicholson, who scored on a wild throw from St. Bonaventure's second baseman. Later in the inning, Nick Mullen and Gates both worked bases-loaded walks to bring home the team's third and fourth runs.
In the fourth, Ellis Schawrtz added to his solid game by tallying an RBI single to right center, scoring Brett Young from third base. Schwartz finished the afternoon 4-for-5 from the dish, recording the lone RBI and scoring two runs. Later in the fourth, Robby Wacker got in on the action with a sacrifice fly to center field. Scoring from third base was Nicholson. In the fifth, Gates got GW on the scoreboard again with a solo home run, his team-best sixth of the season.
With the wind whipping to left center field all day long, the Bonnies were able to capitalize on two separate occasions. The first came in the seventh inning when Adam Rankie lifted a ball high in the air and watched it carry over the wall in left center. The two-run shot cut GW's lead to 7-5 at the time and chased Fultz from the ballgame. After GW got one run back on a sacrifice fly from Young in the seventh, St. Bonaventure capitalized again on the wind with a two-run blast in the eighth, trimming the Buff & Blue lead to 8-7.
In the bottom of the eighth, GW thwarted any hope of a comeback by scoring four runs to take a 12-7 lead. The inning was highlighted by an RBI double from Wacker that scored Schwartz, and a two RBI single from DiTomaso. SBU got a run back in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as Bradnon Siegenthaler cruised to his fourth save of the year. Foltz earned the win on the mound, moving him to 4-1 on the season, while St. Bonaventure's Kade Walker was charged with the loss. Walker drops to 1-2 this season. Foltz tossed 6.2 innings for GW, allowing five earned runs and striking out five batters.
Along with Schwartz, GW was also led offensively by Gates who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. DiTomaso finished 3-6 with two RBI, while Wacker notched a 3-3 line with two RBI and three runs. Nicholson and Gates both earned two walks apiece as well, four of GW's seven walks on the day.
The two programs return to Tucker Field tomorrow for the second matchup of the three-game A-10 opening series. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. with live coverage available on ESPN+.
