ARLINGTON, VA. – Behind five solid innings from starter Jarrett Korson, the George Washington baseball team picked up a 6-3 victory over St. Bonaventure to secure the team's first A-10 series win of the season.
GW got the scoring started in the first when Sam Gates crossed home plate on a wild pitch from SBU starter Michael Salina. Salina, a George Mason transfer, gave up three more runs to GW in the second inning, digging the Bonnies into an early 4-0 hole. The Revolutionaries' three-run second inning was highlighted by two RBI doubles, one from Ellis Schwartz and one from Gates. Gates and Schwartz have both been red-hot swinging the bat this season, with both hovering well over .300 from the plate.
Neither team plated any more runs until the sixth inning when St. Bonaventure dinged up GW reliever Cade Davis for all three of the team's offensive tallies. Davis came on to pitch for Korson, who tossed five shutout innings for the Buff & Blue. Korson allowed just two hits in his outing and struck out one batter. After SBU shrunk GW's lead to 4-3, the Revolutionaries got two more runs back in the eighth inning. McGwire Tuffy tallied the team's first run off an RBI single up the middle, while the second came via an RBI groundout to the shortstop from Nick Mullen.
The insurance runs were more than enough for Brayden Kurtz, who picked up the save after throwing the final 3.1 innings for GW. Kurtz nailed down the win in the ninth for the Buff & Blue, only allowing three baserunners on the day including just one hit. Kurtz's save is his first of the season, while Korson earns the win moving him to 1-1 this year. Salina is charged with the loss, dropping him to 2-2.
Offensively, GW was led by Schwartz who finished 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Gates went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run, while Robby Wacker finished 1-for-3 with two runs as well. Tim Nicholson, Mullen and Tuffy all added one hit each, while Mullen chipped in two RBI for the home team.
GW concludes the A-10 season-opening series and looks for the series sweep over St. Bonaventure on Easter Sunday. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. with live stats available on GWsports.com.
