ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team opened conference play with three straight victories over St. Bonaventure, capped by a 7-0 shutout win in Sunday's series finale. The win secures GW's fourth sweep of the season and marks the team's 10th win in 12 games.
The Buff & Blue pounced on the Bonnies' starter early, tagging him with five runs through the first two innings. Steve DiTomaso got the scoring started in the first, rocketing an RBI double to left center to score Sam Gates. One batter later, Charlie Rogan blasted his third home run of the season, a solo shot that bounced off the videoboard in left field. In the second inning, DiTomaso looked to out-do Rogan by hitting a home run of his own off the videoboard, this time a three-run bomb to left field.
On the other side of the ball, Graham Jeffries was lights out on the hill for the Buff & Blue. Jeffries sat down the first eight batters he faced, and only allowed one hit through the first four innings of the contest. Neither team registered another run until the fifth inning when Rogan ripped an RBI single into center field. Scoring on the play was DiTomaso as the pair of Revolutionaries played a part in six of GW's seven runs on the day.
Following Jeffries exit at the end of the seventh inning, Shugy Klein entered in relief out of GW's bullpen. In total, Jeffries tossed seven innings, allowing just six hits and zero earned runs. Jeffries struck out six batters and tossed a total of 100 pitches. Despite giving up two base hits in the eighth, Klein managed to keep the shutout hopes alive after getting the Bonnies to fly out to center field with runners on second and third.
In the home half of the eighth inning, GW added one more insurance run courtesy of an RBI single from McGwire Tuffy. Rounding third and scoring on the play with Robbie Lavey who had reached base one batter earlier off a double that trickled down the left field line. In the ninth, Klein dug himself into a hole, allowing three of the first four St. Bonaventure batters to reach base successfully, loading the bases with only one out. GW turned to Brandon Siegenthaler to navigate the traffic, getting the next batter to hit into a game-ending double play and secure the shutout. Siegenthaler only needed two pitches to get the job done, getting the Bonnies to hit into a rare 5-3 double-play.
Jeffries picks up the win for GW, moving him to a perfect 4-0 on the season, while Chance Moore was charged with the loss for St. Bonaventure. Moore drops to 1-3 on the season. Offensively, DiTomaso led the way with a 3-for-4 performance which included four RBI and two runs scored. Rogan finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run, while Lavey notched a 2-for-4 line with two runs. Sam Gates enjoyed a stellar weekend for GW, hitting a combined 7-for-12 (.583) from the plate and driving in four RBI. Gates also scored five runs for the Revolutionaries as well.
GW returns to action on Wednesday, hosting William & Mary for the team's 22nd home game of the season. The Buff & Blue continue A-10 play next weekend, opening a three-game series at George Mason on Friday. Wednesday's contest against the Tribe will be aired live on ESPN+, while live stats for all four contests next week will be available on GWsports.com.
