Baseball Opens A-10 Play with Win Over Rhode Island
3/13/2026 7:57:00 PM | Baseball
The George Washington baseball team weathered a slow start at Tucker Field on Friday afternoon to beat Rhode Island, 7-4, in the team's first Atlantic 10 game of the season. The Revolutionaries improve to 7-9 overall in 2026, while the Rams drop to 2-13.
Rhode Island scored two runs in the first and one in the second inning to take a quick 3-0 lead on starting pitcher Max Haug. GW found the scoreboard in the home half of the second, scoring on a throwing error from Rhode Island's right fielder, allowing Conlon Walker to score all the way from second base on the play.
The Buff & Blue knotted the score up in the third, scoring twice on bases-loaded walks. The first came from Brodie Freker, while the second was worked by Charlie Walsh, with both players picking up an RBI.
After Rhode Island regained a one-run lead in the fourth, Connor Jones knotted things back up in the seventh, scoring from third base on a passed ball. Later that inning, GW took its first lead of the afternoon on an RBI fielder's choice from Walsh, scoring Robbie Lavey. The Revolutionaries made it 6-4 in the seventh, doubling their lead via an RBI groundout to third base. In total, GW plated three runs in the seventh without tallying a base hit in the frame.
GW put the finishing touches on the win in the eighth, scoring another run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch from Walsh, concluding his three-RBI day. None of GW's seven runs were scored on a hit, the first such occurrence this season.
After Haug was pulled following five innings of work, Gavin Miller tossed three stellar innings of no-hit baseball in relief. Miller earned the win, moving him to 2-0 this season, while striking out five batters and allowing just one base runner. Colin Lebel sealed the deal in the ninth, slamming the door on URI for his third save this year.
GW looks for the series win tomorrow, hosting Rhode Island at 1:00 p.m. Sunday's series finale is set for 12:00 p.m., with a special pregame ceremony set to take place, retiring Hank Bunnell's No. 18 jersey. Bunnell becomes the first member of the GW baseball program to receive the honor.
