The George Washington baseball team concludes its 11-game homestand with a midweek contest against Towson on Wednesday (2:30 p.m.), followed by a three-game series with Rhode Island (Fri. 3:00 p.m., Sat. 1:00 p.m. and Sun. 12:00 p.m.) to open Atlantic 10 play this weekend. The Revolutionaries will also honor the career of Hank Bunnell pregame on Sunday, who will become the first GW baseball player in program history to have his jersey number retired.
Â
Towson, who enters the week 5-7 overall, had a rough start to conference play last weekend, getting swept by Monmouth at home. The Tigers have two wins against Norfolk State and New Mexico State, along with a single victory against Canisius, thus far. Towson is led by Head Coach Matt Tyner, who's in his eighth season with the program and 10th year overall as a Division I skipper. He's amassed a 122-274 record with the Tigers, tying his most wins in a single season last year with 21.
Â
Towson's leader on offense is Nick LoBello, who's batting .387 in 10 games. LoBello has 12 total hits, including two doubles, and has driven in six RBI. Brian Heckelman and Frank Adamski Jr. are tied for the team lead with 11 RBI, while Heckelman leads the club with three home runs. Towson's complete 2026 stats can be found here.
Â
Rhode Island enters the week having picked up its first win of the season last Sunday over Brown. The Rams are 1-12 overall as of Tuesday morning, with a midweek matchup against New Haven still yet to play. The reigning A-10 regular-season and tournament champs are led by Raph Cerrato, who's in his 12th year with the program. Cerrato is a three-time A-10 Coach of the Year and saw two members of his championship team sign with MLB clubs last summer.
Â
Rhody's offense is led by Reece Moroney, who's hitting .373 this season. Moroney leads the team with 19 hits, including three doubles and seven RBI. Jayden Tolentino leads the club with three home runs and nine RBI. On the mound, Rhode Island has shuffled its starting rotation, with Joe Sabbath being the only constant across four weekend series. Sabbath has tossed 16.2 innings, having allowed 21 earned runs and striking out 21 batters for an ERA of 11.34. Rhode Island's 2026 stats can be found here.
Â
Prior to Sunday's game, Bunnell's No. 18 will be retired at Tucker Field. Bunnell, who played at GW from 1968-71, was named the program's Player of the Century for the 1900s, having been named a four-time All-Southern Conference selection. Bunnell was inducted into the GW Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002 and still holds multiple program records over 50 years later. Bunnell was selected 48th overall in the 1971 MLB draft by the Washington Senators and pitched two seasons in the minor leagues before retiring. Bunnell passed away in March of 2024, but his No. 18 will live on as a symbol of excellence within the program and will be on display at every home game in left field at Tucker Field.
