Baseball Adds Smoot as Assistant Coach, Recruiting Coordinator

Head Coach Gregg Ritchie and the George Washington baseball team have announced the addition of Ryan Smoot to the program as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. Smoot will work specifically with GW's infield and will serve as the team's third base coach.

"Ryan brings a unique blend of experience, leadership and creativity with a genuine, passionate winning mentality. Our program will benefit greatly from not only the talented professional he is, but from the authentic person that he is. He'll deliver a high standard of character for our student-athletes and drive each player toward reaching their potential. It's with great pleasure that we welcome Ryan and his family to Foggy Bottom and The Tuck."

Smoot most recently served as an assistant coach at VMI for two seasons, helping the Keydets to solid seasons while on staff. VMI won 53 games across the 2025 and 2026 campaigns, while also ranking amongst the top programs in the country in multiple statistical categories. In 2026, the Keydets finished second in the country in stolen bases (181) and stolen bases per game (3.29), while also ranking in the top 20 in shutouts (16). During the 2025 season, VMI lead the country in stolen bases (209) and stolen bases per game (3.94), while also ranking third in team on-base percentage (.446), sixth in runs per game (9.3) and 14th in total walks (344).

Prior to his time with VMI, Smoot spent two seasons with Winthrop, working as an assistant coach, specifically with the team's hitters and catchers. He helped the Eagles to top-three finishes in both the Big South Regular Season and Conference Tournaments, while also improving Winthrop's offensive numbers significantly during his short tenure.

Before Winthrop, Smoot served on staff at Appalachian State for two seasons, working with the Mountaineers' catchers and assisting with hitters and baserunners. Smoot helped lead the program to its best Sun Belt Conference record in school history in 2021 and the best two finishes in school history at the Conference Tournament in 2021 and 2022.

During the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Smoot was in Foggy Bottom, working as a volunteer assistant under Ritchie's staff. He worked specifically with GW's catchers and hitters, including Cade Fergus, who was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2022 MLB Draft.

Smoot is a 2019 graduate of VMI with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Business. He was a four-year member of the Keydets' baseball program, leading the Southern Conference in on-base percentage as a senior.
