Behind a six-run third inning and stellar bullpen pitching, the George Washington baseball team secured an 8-6 win over Rhode Island on Saturday, securing the team's first Atlantic 10 series win of the season. The Revolutionaries move to 8-9 (2-0, A-10) on the season, while Rhode Island drops to 2-14 (0-2, A-10).
Â
After both starting pitchers got through the first two innings without allowing a hit, the Rams tallied three in the top of the third off Andrew Cutler. The deficit didn't last long as GW put up six runs in the home half of the inning, kick-started by an RBI single from Robbie Lavey. Brodie Freker kept the momentum rolling with a two-RBI double to left-center, while Charlie Walsh put the Buff & Blue ahead with a single to center field, scoring Freker from second base. Nick Mullen put the finishing touches on the inning, driving in two more on a double to left field.
Â
Rhode Island erased GW's lead with one run in the fourth and two in the fifth, but the Revolutionaries quickly regained control, putting up two runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead for good. Conlon Walker gave GW a 7-6 lead with an RBI single through the right side, while Mullen doubled the advantage when he hit into a double play, bringing home Walsh from third.
Â
URI threatened to tie the game and more in the ninth, putting their first two batters of the inning on base. However, Drew Harris had other ideas, sitting the next three Rams batters down in order, securing the win.
Â
Cutler picked up the win for GW, moving him to 2-1 this season after tossing five innings. He tallied two strikeouts and threw 94 total pitches. Matt Bruno was stellar in relief, throwing three shutout innings and striking out three batters. Harris secured the save, his first of the season.
Â
GW looks for the sweep tomorrow, hosting the Rams for game three of the weekend series at Tucker Field. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m., with a special pregame ceremony to retire the jersey of GW baseball legend, Hank Bunnell, set to take place roughly 15 minutes prior to gametime.
