Baseball Honors Hank Bunnell Sunday vs. Rhode Island
3/15/2026 5:32:00 PM | Baseball
The George Washington baseball team honored program legend Hank Bunnell on Sunday by retiring his No. 18 jersey at Tucker Field. The Revolutionaries dropped the series finale to the Rams, 7-2, moving GW's record to 8-10 overall and 2-1 in Atlantic 10 action.
Â
Prior to first pitch, members of the Bunnell family were brought on the field as a banner donning the No. 18 was unveiled along the left field fence at Tucker Field. Bunnell becomes the first alumnus in program history to have his jersey number retired and joins Sam Perlozzo, who will have his jersey honored later this season, as the only two on display at GW's home ballpark. Bunnell was named the program's Player of the Century for the 1900s and is the all-time leader in multiple statistical categories, including strikeouts, complete games and shutouts.
Â
The GW Revs were unable to treat the home fans to a sweep of the visiting Rams as URI jumped ahead early with six runs in the second inning and tacked on a seventh in the fourth frame. GW answered back with an RBI single from Robbie Lavey in the sixth and an RBI single from Nick Mullen in the ninth but couldn't mount a complete comeback with the bases loaded in the home half of the ninth inning.
Â
Declan Wywoda was charged with his second loss of the season after pitching 1.1 innings in the start. Jonas Aponick, Drew Harris, Reese Crochet and Jasper Nadel all had scoreless appearances out of GW's bullpen.
Â
The Revolutionaries return to action Wednesday for the team's first road game since Feb. 25. GW is set to travel to Harrisonburg for a 3:00 p.m. matchup with James Madison on ESPN+.
