Baseball Welcomes Zapotek from Transfer Portal

Head Coach Gregg Ritchie and the George Washington baseball program have announced the addition of pitcher Matt Zapotek from the transfer portal. Zapotek arrives in Foggy Bottom after one season with Rice.

A native of Cypress, Texas, Zapotek appeared in 11 games for the Owls in 2025, all of which came in relief. He struck out eight batters in 8.2 total innings and tallied a season-high two strikeouts against USC. Zapotek made his collegiate debut in the Puerto Rico Baseball Challenge against Virginia, one of three scoreless appearances he would post that season.

Zapotek began his collegiate career at Texas in 2023, spending the fall in Austin before transferring to Rice in January of 2024. After redshirting the 2024 campaign, he worked his way into Rice's bullpen for the 2025 season. Zatopek entered the portal again in December of 2025, sitting out for the 2026 season.

A two-time All-SPC selection, Zapotek served as a team captain and won the Team MVP award as a senior at Houston Christian. He finished the year with a 1.02 ERA and .79 WHIP over 48.0 innings, striking out 70 and tallying 12 walks.
