The George Washington baseball team dropped its rubber match with Yale on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Bulldogs, 15-11, in a high-powered slugfest at Tucker Field. The loss drops GW to 6-8 on the season.
After a costly error in the field led to a Yale run in the top of the first, GW's offense picked up for the mistake, putting up five runs in the home half of the inning. Charlie Rogan got his big day started with a two-run home run to center field, followed by an RBI double from Conlon Walker, which scored Charlie Walsh. Nick Mullen picked up an RBI on a single up the middle, while Cristino Tufano rounded out the inning with a single to center field, scoring Mullen.
Yale's offense answered back in the third to post three runs and get within one, but Tufano extended the lead again, launching a two-run homer to left-center, bringing home Walker on the play.
A five-run fourth inning, aided by a Jack Dauer grand slam, saw Yale recapture a 9-7 lead, which it wouldn't relinquish the rest of the day. Rogan got the GW Revs within one in the bottom of the inning with a solo blast, his second of the day, before Yale posted three more runs in the fifth to make it 12-8.
Nick Mullen tallied a solo home run in the fifth and a two-RBI double down the left field line in the sixth to get GW in double figures at 12-10. Yale would answer back in the top of the seventh with two more runs off a throwing error from GW and another in the eighth on a double from Bryce Miller. GW's final run of the afternoon came on a passed ball, scoring Robbie Lavey from third.
Rogan led the way for GW's offense, finishing 4-6 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored. Rogan now leads the Atlantic 10 in home runs this season, tallying seven in 14 games played. Nick Mullen also went 4-6 with three RBI and two runs while picking up his first home run of the season.
Reese Crochet was charged with the loss, dropping him to 0-1 in a game that saw six arms see action from GW's pitching staff. Declan Wywoda earned the start, tossing 3.0 innings and allowing three earned runs. Yale's Daniel Cohen earned the win, while Tate Evans was credited with his first save of the season.
GW returns to The Tuck on Wednesday, hosting Towson at 2:30 p.m.
