Baseball Takes Game Two, But Falls in Series Finale at Davidson

Before Saturday's game was suspended, the GW Revs used a lightning delay in the fifth with the game knotted at five to power the club to surge out of the pause with five runs in the seventh inning and three more in the eighth. After fanning 16 times in Friday's opener, GW cut its number of Ks Saturday to just six in game two, and banged out five extra base hits including home runs from Sam Gates and Tim Nicholson for the second-consecutive day. Gates' blast was game-altering as the three-run dinger in the seventh broke a 5-5 tie, and the Revolutionaries never looked back.
Greg Marmo also homered in the contest with a solo shot to make it 12-8 in the 8th. After scoring three times in Friday's contest, Ellis Schwartz was once again the table setter Saturday. The senior was aboard five times, via three hits - including a triple - and two walks, with a pair of runs, RBIs and steals.
Andrew Cutler got the starting nod for GW and pitched four with three runs allowed. Cade Davis was credited with the win, while Max Haug was huge on Sunday, keeping the game exactly where it was left overnight. Haug worked 1.2 scoreless innings to keep Davidson at bay.
Sunday's finale was another high-scoring affair with 21 more runs and 22 additional hits between the combatants; Davidson held the edge where it mattered most in the 11-10 edge for the 'Cats. GW battled back from a 4-0 hole to take a 9-5 lead into the home half of the seventh, but the Revolutionaries couldn't hold on to the lead as Davidson plated four in the 7th and a pair in the eighth to take the game and series.
Familiar faces all series long starred at the plate for the Buff & Blue, with Gates going yard for the third-straight game and Schwartz finding his way aboard three more times with a double and two walks. The pair accounted for five of GW's nine RBIs; one run came in via the unearned variety. George Washington drew eight walks in the contest, but went down by strikeout nine times.
The team returns from North Carolina with an even 12-12 record in A-10 play to its credit, and in a sixth-place tie with Dayton for the last two spots in the seven-team A-10 Championship tournament later this month. Saint Joseph's visits The Tuck this weekend for a three-game set with its 14-10 league mark on the line, two games ahead of GW and in the fifth-spot in the Atlantic 10. First pitch Friday comes at 3 p.m.
