ARLINGTON, Va. – Senior Tim Nicholson was presented the annual Warren Fulton Memorial Award prior to the George Washington baseball team's series-opening against Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon. The Hawks then topped the Revolutionaries, 12-4, to take an early lead in the series.
SJU found the scoreboard first with two runs in the second inning after both teams went down in order in the first. The lead was short-lived, however, as Sam Gates launched a two-run homer to left field to tie the game. The home run was Gates' eighth of the season to equal teammate Ellis Schwartz for the team lead.
The middle innings were controlled by Saint Joseph's as the Hawks tallied two runs in the third, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to open up an 8-2 lead. Multiple milestones were hit for GW during that stretch, as Michael Foltz Jr. recorded his 150th strikeout with the Buff & Blue and Gates entered the program's top 10 in career doubles.
Gates got GW back on the scoreboard in the sixth with his second double of the day into right-center field, scoring Robbie Lavey from second base. One batter later, Ty Acker singled to left field, scoring Gates to cut the deficit to 8-4.
SJU shut down all hopes of a comeback, plating four more runs over the final two innings to seal the 12-4 win. Foltz was charged with the loss for GW, dropping him to 2-8 on the season.
The teams return to The Tuck tomorrow as the Revolutionaries celebrate Senior Day. Festivities are scheduled to begin at 12:25 p.m. on the field with the team handing out the annual MVP Award, the "I Got Your Back" Award and then honoring all 12 graduating members of the program. Escorts that will be participating in the on-field ceremony are asked to gather behind the third base dugout at noon tomorrow on the concourse. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
