AMHERST, Mass. – The George Washington baseball team swept UMass in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon, defeating the Minutemen, 9-5, in game one and recording a 12-7 victory in the nightcap. The Buff & Blue improve to 24-18 on the season and 11-9 in conference play. GW has now won six games in a row and five straight A-10 matchups.
Game One
Tim Nicholson got the scoring started in game one, driving in an RBI off a fielder's choice. Scoring on the play was Ellis Schwartz. GW's lead didn't last long, as the home team notched two runs of their own in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 advantage.
In the sixth, the Revolutionaries knotted the contest at two via an RBI single through the left side from Cristino Tufano. The lead wasn't safe for long once again, as UMass tallied a solo home run in the home half of the inning to retake a 3-2 advantage.
GW flipped the script in the seventh when Sam Gates launched a two-run home run to left field, putting GW back in front at 4-3. The Revolutionaries added an insurance run in the eighth, scoring off a UMass balk with the bases loaded, scoring Tufano from third base.
After UMass got one back in the eighth to make it 5-4, GW erupted for four runs in the ninth to take a commanding 9-4 lead. Ty Acker got the inning started with an RBI single, scoring two runners on the play. Rogan punctuated the inning with another two-RBI single, this one plating both Tufano and Walker.
The Minutemen got one back in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback. Michael Foltz Jr. tossed 5.1 innings in the start for GW, allowing two earned runs and striking out three batters. Max Haug earned the win in relief, tossing the remaining 3.2 innings and notching six punchouts.
Game Two
Following a 30-minute break between games, GW didn't wait long to jump in front, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Tufano launched a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Robbie Lavey from third base to put GW ahead for good.
GW added four more runs in the fourth, with the first two coming on a two-run homer from Conlon Walker. Rogan tallied an RBI infield single, while Greg Marmo notched his first RBI of the day off a sacrifice fly, pushing GW's lead to 5-0.
UMass tallied three runs in the home half of the fourth, but GW answered back in the sixth with a solo home run from Rogan to make it 6-4, Buff & Blue.
GW's offense erupted again in the seventh, tallying five runs to take a seven-run lead. Five different players tallied an RBI in the frame, highlighted by Marmo, who ripped an RBI double down the left field line.
UMass recorded three runs down the stretch but didn't sniff a comeback as GW locked up the series victory. Andrew Cutler made his second start of the season, tossing 5.2 innings and recording the win, moving him to a perfect 5-0 on the season. Cutler struck out seven batters and allowed four earned runs. Cade Davis tossed 2.1 innings in relief with one earned run, while Tyler Blankenship pitched the ninth inning, allowing one run and striking out three.
Despite not tallying a hit in game two, Sam Gates reached base twice via walks. His second was notable as he entered the program's top 10 all-time in the category, with 96 over three seasons. He equals Jeff Fertitta '04, Charlie Kruer '08 and Noah Levin '23, who are all in a four-way tie for 10th all-time.
GW has now won two A-10 series in a row, including last weekend's sweep against Richmond. The Revolutionaries look to secure their second sweep in a row and seventh-straight victory on Sunday at noon. Live coverage will be carried on ESPN+.
