ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Washington baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 9-5 victory over UMES on Tuesday afternoon. The win pushes GW's streak to seven straight games, the longest stretch of Ws since 2021.
After a scoreless first inning, the Revolutionaries jumped on the scoreboard with a single run in the second. Ellis Schwartz singled down the right field line, scoring Alexander Wright, to put the first run on the board. In the third inning, UMES' offense came alive, loading the bases with no outs. Derrick Mayes II proceeded to launch a grand slam over the right field wall, giving UMES a 4-1 advantage. Despite the rocky inning, Andrew Cutler, GW's starting pitcher for the outing, settled in and got through the rest of the frame unscathed.
GW cut into the Hawks' lead in the fourth inning when Robbie Lavey crushed a solo homer to left field to make the score 4-2. The solo jack was Lavey's first of his collegiate career. In the fifth, Nick Mullen got into the action, also belting a solo home run to make the score 4-3. The long ball was Mullen's first collegiate homer and adds another accolade to what has been a very successful rookie season thus far. Later in the inning, Brett Young tied things up with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Sam Gates. The Revolutionaries recaptured the lead for good two batters later when Wright delivered a double to left center that scored Young from first.
GW would add onto its lead in the sixth, recording two more runs to push the advantage to 7-4. The first score came via an RBI from Young who reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. The second was scored when Robby Wacker roped a double down the left field line to score Mullen. After UMES tallied one run in the eighth, GW put the game away with two more in the home half of the inning. Young once again delivered, this time shooting a double down the left field line to score DiTomaso. Young would later score on a wild pitch to tally the Revolutionaries' final run.
Cutler finished his day with four innings pitched and four earned runs given up. He struck out six batters and allowed three total hits. Tyler Blankenship picked up the win in relief, tossing three scoreless innings and only allowing one hit. Cade Davis got 0.2 innings of action for GW, while Benny Wilson cleaned things up in the final 1.1 innings. Wilson earned the save, his second of the year, and didn't allow a hit in the appearance.
Offensively, Young notched a 2-for-5 line with three RBI and two runs scored. Wright and Schwartz both went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Mullen finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
GW is back tomorrow for a 2:30 p.m. matchup with Virginia. Tomorrow's game will be a ticketed event, with fans able to purchase seats online at GWsports.com/tickets or at the gate. Live coverage will be available on ESPN+.
