WASHINGTON – Riding a six-game winning streak, the George Washington baseball team welcomes UMES and Virginia for midweek matchups at Tucker Field. The Revolutionaries host UMES on Tuesday, while UVA travels north to Arlington on Wednesday. Both games are scheduled for a 2:30 first pitch. Tickets for Wednesday's game can be purchased at GWsports.com/tickets, while live coverage of the contest will be aired on ESPN+. Live stats for both games can be found at GWsports.com.
LAST TIME OUT
The Revolutionaries capped off a stellar week of action with a 5-3 win over UAlbany on Sunday, sweeping the Great Danes and pushing the team's win streak to six games. Robby Wacker led the way for GW, hitting a combined .429 over the weekend. Wacker tallied two doubles and three runs scored for GW, while also adding four RBI and eight total bases. Nick Mullen continued his solid start to college baseball, batting .400 on the week with four hits and six walks. Mullen also tallied five of GW's runs and had an RBI.
Even more impressive than GW's bats were the performances the pitching staff put on. On Friday, Michael Fultz started on the mound, tossing seven scoreless innings, and only allowing two total hits. That propelled GW to a 10-0 shutout victory, the team's first shutout of the season. In Saturday's 11-6 victory, Max Haug pitched three innings of scoreless baseball, only allowing one total hit, and sitting down nine of the 10 batters he faced. Haug was credited with the save, his first of the season. Sunday's 5-3 win was a little tighter for the GW Revs, relying on Brandon Siegenthaler to shut down the Great Dane offense to seal the victory. Entering the game in the sixth inning, Siegenthaler didn't allow a base runner for the rest of the game, sitting down 12 straight to propel GW to victory. Siegenthaler finished with three strikeouts and was credited with the victory, moving him to 1-0 on the year.
RITCHIE HONORED FOR MILESTONE
Prior to Sunday's game, head coach Gregg Ritchie was honored for surpassing the program record for most career wins. Ritchie now has 278 victories as head coach of GW's program, surpassing Tom Walter for the record. Ritchie was joined on field by his wife and one of his daughters, who presented him with the game ball from Friday's record-clinching win. Ritchie was also honored with a compilation of videos spanning from family, friends, former players and GW alums that shared congratulations and appreciation for his time in the Buff & Blue.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
UMES enters the week 0-9 after three straight loses to Alabama State last weekend. The Hawks were outscored 35-11 over those three games and have failed to score more than five runs in a single game this season. Statistically, UMES is led by Derrick Mayes II who boasts a batting average of .370 in eight total starts. He has 10 hits on the year, including one home run, and he's drove home two. He has a team-high .481 slugging percentage and holds an on-base percentage of .469. On the mound, Gary Hallmen Jr. has enjoyed a nice start to the season. He's appeared in three games and pitched five total innings. Hallmen Jr. has six total strikeouts and has only given up one earned run on the year, giving him an ERA of 1.80.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
Virginia is welcomed to Tucker Field on Wednesday, as the 13th-ranked Cavaliers make the trip north to the DMV. Virginia is 10-1 on the year but will host Penn State on Tuesday before traveling to face GW. The Cavaliers' lone loss of the season came against fellow A-10 institution UMass, who defeated the UVA 10-5 last Saturday. Prior to that loss, Virginia had won its first nine games of the season including a 12-9 win vs. 18th-ranked Iowa. Offensively, the Cavaliers are led by Henry Godbout who's hitting a scorching .515 on the season. Godbout has 17 total hits this year including seven doubles and one home run. He has 10 RBI this season, one of five players to notch double digits RBI this year already. The team also has six players batting .300 or better, including two that are north of .500. On the mound, Cullen McKay has been lights out in his first three appearances. McKay has made two starts and one relief appearance, pitching 11.1 total innings. He's given up just five hits and one earned run, while also striking out 12 batters. As a staff, Virginia's pitchers hold a team ERA or 4.19 and have 103 K's through 11 games.
