TOWSON, Md. – The George Washington baseball team picked up its fourth win in five games on Wednesday night, using timely hitting down the stretch to top Towson, 7-4. The GW Revs got five solid innings out of starter Jarrett Korson, who held the Tigers to just two hits and three total baserunners through the game's first five frames.
GW got the scoring started in the second inning when Robby Wacker registered an RBI off a fielder's choice. Robbie Lavey scored on the play from third base to give GDUB the 1-0 advantage. An inning later, the Buff & Blue added to its lead when Steve DiTomaso scored on a wild pitch. The run would be the first of three for DiTomaso on the day, marking a new season-high for the graduate left fielder.
Following Korson's exit at the end of the fifth, GW allowed its first run of the game in the sixth off Brayden Kurtz. The run would go down as unearned after GW's defense allowed the first two Tiger batters to reach successfully on fielding errors. The Buff & Blue bounced back in the seventh to put two more runs on the board and extend its lead to 4-1, but it wouldn't last long. Towson answered with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to knot the score at four apiece.
Entering the eighth inning tied, first-year Nick Mullen stepped to the plate and blasted a solo home run to recapture the lead. The homer was Mullen's second this season and came in a big spot to give GW the lead once again late in the game. After Andrew Cutler shut down Towson's offense in the eighth, the GW bats added two more insurance runs in the ninth to stretch the lead to 7-4. Charlie Rogan tallied a double to score DiTomaso for the first run of the inning. Two batters later, Wacker registered his second RBI of the day off a double to left field to score Alexander Wright.
GW turned to Brandon Siegenthaler in the ninth inning to nail down the win, and he did just that. Siegenthaler worked a 1-2-3 inning to secure his third save of the season and lock down GW's 12th win of the year. Cutler earned the win for GW, moving him to 1-0 on the season, while Jordan Luton was charged with the loss for Towson, dropping him to 1-2. DiTomaso ended his solid day 4-for-4 from the plate with his three runs scored, while Rogan went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Mullen notched a 2-for-4 line with an RBI and a run, while Lavey finished 2-for-3 with a walk.
GW returns to action on Friday to open a three-game series with Canisius at Tucker Field. Friday's contest is slated for 3:00 p.m. and will be carried live on ESPN+.
