NORFOLK, Va. – The George Washington baseball team dropped the final matchup of its three-game season-opening series to Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon. The Monarchs defeated the Revolutionaries 8-2 to complete the sweep.
GW found the scoreboard first, capitalizing on a wild pitch that brought Steve DiTomaso across home plate. The Monarchs tallied three runs of their own in the bottom halves of the fourth and the sixth inning to open a 6-1 advantage. The Buff & Blue scored again in the top of the seventh via an RBI single from Ellis Schwartz to cut the deficit to 6-2, but that's all GW could muster for the rest of the game. Old Dominion tallied two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, the final two for either squad.
GW was led by Robby Wacker who finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate and scored one run. Schwartz notched a 2-for-4 line with the team's lone RBI, while DiTomaso went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sam Gates and McGwire Tuffy both registered one hit each for the Revolutionaries. Teddy Brennan made his first start of the season for GW, tossing 3.2 innings and giving up three earned runs. Brennan struck out three batters and gave up five hits in the loss. Max Haug tossed two innings in relief for GDUB, allowing three earned runs and registering one strikeout. Tyler Blankenship threw 1.1 innings with one strikeout, while Shugy Klein went one inning with two Ks.
The Revolutionaries are back in action Friday for the team's home opener against Bryant. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. and will open a three-game series against the Bulldogs that extends into Saturday and Sunday. Live coverage through ESPN+ will be available on Friday and Sunday.
