Baseball Suffers Setback in Home Opener
2/23/2024 9:18:00 PM | Baseball
The offense got going immediately for both teams as Bryant tallied three runs in the top half of the first inning. GW immediately responded in the bottom of the first, plating five runs of their own to take a 5-3 lead. Bryan Belo headlined the inning, launching a two-run homer that scored McGwire Tuffy. Also homering in the inning was Ellis Schwartz, his first of the season.
After Bryant failed to score in the visiting half of the second, GW tacked on another run via a solo shot from Sam Gates. The home run extended the GW lead to 6-3, the largest advantage the Buff & Blue would have all day. In the bottom of the third, Bryant erupted for five runs courtesy of two home runs to retake an 8-6 lead. Justin Hackett hit a solo shot for the Bulldogs in the inning, while Gavin Greger added a two-run blast.
Bryant added three more in the fifth off a solo and two-run homer, creating the largest lead either team would enjoy all day at 11-6. GW would have an answer in the bottom of the sixth, registering three more runs to cut Bryant's advantage to 11-9. In the seventh, GW got another run via a sacrifice fly from Tim Nicholson which made the score 11-10. Despite GW's best efforts, the comeback wouldn't be enough as Bryant tallied two more runs in the eighth and secured the 13-10 win.
Michael Foltz earned his second start of the season for GW, tossing two innings and giving up six earned runs. Brayden Kurtz was charged with his first loss of the season after giving up five earned runs in 2.2 innings of work out of GDUB's bullpen. Cade Davis and Tyler Blankenship also saw action in relief. Davis threw 2.1 scoreless innings, while Blankenship threw two innings and allowed two earned runs. Tyler Tornberg earned the win on the mound after Austin Wainer allowed two earned runs in four innings of work. Tornberg gave up three earned runs in two total innings.
GW returns to Tucker Field on Saturday to continue its three-game series with Bryant. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. Live coverage will not be available for the contest, but fans can follow live stats of the game on GWsports.com.
