Three Colonials register three-hit afternoons in win
Entering Wednesday, GW had outscored its opponents 74-31 in home openers under Head Coach Gregg Ritchie. The Colonials kept up with the trend in Wednesday's opener at the Tuck, cranking out five runs in the first three innings to stake themselves to a 5-0 lead. At the center of the offensive attack were Michael Kohn and Sam Gates, who each launched round trippers in the second and third innings, respectively.
GW's offense would continue its assault in the fifth with four more runs, and Kohn and Gates were once again catalysts for the offense. After Kohn reached on a hit by pitch, Gates drove him home with an RBI double to push the GW lead to 6-0. One batter later, Steve Ditomaso scored Gates on an RBI single to make it 8-0, and finally Eddie Micheletti capped off the inning with an RBI double to make it 9-0.
In the sixth, Maryland Eastern Shore's offense would put together its own big inning. The Hawks plated five runs on a pair of RBI singles by Riley Horner and Doyle McNew to trim the deficit to 9-5. However, GW would add an insurance run in the bottom half of the frame to make it 10-5.
Over the final three innings, the UMES bats continued to chip away at the GW bullpen, plating four more runs in the eighth and ninth innings. However, the Buff & Blue's pitchers buckled down and escaped a jam in the ninth to prevent any further damage and finish off the 11-9 victory.
Individually, Gates, Kohn and Micheletti all tallied three hits on Wednesday afternoon. Gates also drove in three runs, walked three times, and scored four runs from the leadoff spot. On the mound, starter Max Haug tossed two scoreless innings and struck out two in his collegiate debut.

GW will host its first weekend series of the year when it welcomes Fairfield to Tucker Field. First pitch at Friday's opener is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
