Buff & Blue belt four homers in 11-9 setback
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball built a seven-run lead on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park, only to see the visiting Fairfield Stags storm back with nine unanswered runs in the last three innings to snag an 11-9 victory in the series opener.
Trailing 9-2 heading into the seventh, Fairfield plated six runs to get back in the game. Matt Venuto delivered the big knock with a two-run single in the frame. An inning later, Griffin Watson knotted the game at nine with a two-out RBI single. Charlie Pagliarini then put the Stags ahead with a solo homer in the ninth inning, his second long ball of the game.
GW was unable to respond, seeing its final eight batters be retired against the Fairfield bullpen.
The Buff & Blue had built its lead via the long ball. Michael Kohn started the festivities with a three-run jack in the second, his second homer in as many games at home. An inning later, Robby Wacker launched his own three-run shot to give GW a 7-1 cushion.
Anthony Frechette, who had just four homers to his credit in his first four years with GW, connected on a pair of solo dingers, one in the fourth and one in the sixth for his first career multi-homer game.
Frechette, Kohn and Sam Gates all tallied multi-hit days for GW, who ended up with 11 hits in all.
Logan Koester was strong on the mound for GW through six frames before being roughed up for four runs in the seventh. In all, Koester gave up six runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings with four strikeouts. Connor Harris took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits 1.2 frames.
Due to pending inclement weather, Saturday's middle game of the series has been postponed and rescheduled as a doubleheader on Sunday morning with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
