The Colonials and Hawks will meet Wednesday at 2:30
WASHINGTON – Following an opening series at East Carolina, George Washington baseball will return to Tucker Field for its first home game of the 2023 campaign. GW will welcome in Maryland Eastern Shore for a 2:30 p.m. matinee, with live coverage available on ESPN+.
STRONG FIRST IMPRESSION
In the Colonials' opening series against #11 East Carolina, four players had successful debut weekends. Sophomore Sam Gates, as well as transfers Brett Young, Robby Wacker and Bryan Belo all registered multiple hits against the Pirates and combined to drive in nine runs.
Gates, who missed all of last season with an injury, made his GW debut in centerfield on Saturday and went 5-for-11 over the three games. Gates also launched his first career home run in Sunday's series finale.
Meanwhile, Young, a transfer from Siena, finished second on the team with four hits and tallied a team-high three walks over the weekend.
Wacker, an Emory University transfer, led all GW players with four RBIs over the weekend, while Belo, who transferred from Lake Land Community College, crushed his first long ball for the Colonials on Saturday.
HOME OPENER SUCCESS
Wednesday will be the Colonials' 11th opener at The Tuck under head coach Gregg Ritchie, and to say they've enjoyed success in their home opener during Ritchie's tenure would be an understatement.
Entering Wednesday, GW is 9-1 in home openers during the Ritchie era, with their only loss coming back in 2013 during Coach Ritchie's first season.
Traditionally, the Colonials have raked in their home opener under Ritchie. The team has outscored its opponent 74-31 in the prior 10 games and has tallied eight runs or more on five different occasions.
SCOUTING UMES
Maryland Eastern Shore begins 2023 on the heels of a 17-37 season in 2022, however, the 17 victories were the most by a Hawks team since 2006. This year, UMES will begin a new chapter in its history as it joins the Northeast Conference following its departure from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
Individually, the Hawks will return several veteran members of their squad. Leading the way is shortstop Dillion Oxyer, who has made 170 career starts at the position and tallied 43 hits in 2022. Leading the rotation is Evan Nibblett, who was named to the MEAC All-Tournament team last year. In 2022, Nibblett finished 19th in the country in walks per nine innings (1.40) and pitched to a 3.43 ERA.
