Sam Gates and Robby Wacker hit first homers of the year on Sunday
GW entered Sunday looking to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Pirates. However, unlike the previous two games of the series, GW found itself trailing early against ECU. The Pirates pushed three runs across in the first inning, two of which were unearned after a pair of throwing errors by the GW defense.
In the fourth inning, GW would answer back thanks to the long ball. Robby Wacker, the senior transfer from Emory University, smacked a two-run homer to left field, to make it a 3-2 game. The home run was Wacker's first in a GW uniform.
The bottom halves of the next two innings proved to be the turning point of the game. ECU's offense came alive in the fourth and fifth, pumping out 12 of their 23 runs while sending 20 batters to the plate.
GW answered with two runs of its own thanks to Sam Gates' first long ball of the season, but the Colonials were ultimately unable to keep pace with the Pirates' bats for the remainder of Sunday.
As a team, GW registered nine hits on the afternoon. Both Gates and first baseman Michael Kohn recorded two hits each. Gates also drove in three.
