Brett Young begins his GW career with four hits on Saturday
GREENVILLE, N.C. – George Washington baseball took early leads in both games of its season-opening doubleheader against #11 East Carolina on Saturday, but was unable to pull out the victory in either contest, falling 9-5 and 11-3.
Game 1: #11 East Carolina 9, GW 5
The Colonials opened their season in strong fashion, staking themselves to a 4-0 lead against the reigning American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year Carter Spivey. GW tagged Spivey for four runs on five hits across just 2.2 innings while sending 16 batters to the plate.
Unfortunately for GW, knocking Spivey out of the game changed the Pirates' fortunes. ECU's bullpen would combine to throw six innings of one-run ball the rest of the way, and the Pirates' offense rallied for four runs in the middle innings to tie the game up at four.
Eventually in the seventh and eighth innings, the nation's 11th ranked team scored five unearned runs against GW following three errors in the infield, with the big blow being a three-run homer by Pirates second baseman Jacob Starling. GW would score a final run in the ninth, but ultimately fell 9-5 in its season opener.
Despite the loss, third baseman Brett Young had a strong Buff & Blue debut. The Siena transfer went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Game 2: #11 East Carolina 11, GW 3
In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Colonials once again struck first when they pushed a pair of runs across in the third inning. Junior Bryan Belo, a transfer from Lake Land Community College, launched his first homer in the Buff & Blue to put GW up 1-0. Two batters later, Eddie Micheletti lined a sac fly to left that scored Sam Gates to put GW up 2-0.
GW's lead would last just one inning though, as ECU pushed a pair of runs across in the bottom of the fourth.
In the bottom of the sixth, East Carolina would take the lead for good. The Pirates plated eight runs on four hits, including a grand slam by outfielder Jacob Jenkins-Cowart, to give them a 10-2 lead.
The two teams would trade a pair of runs in the later innings, but ECU was never threatened and it wrapped up the 11-3 win.
