WASHINGTON – Play ball! The George Washington baseball team will get to hear those words again this weekend when it officially begins its 2023 campaign against the East Carolina Pirates. GW will play a three-game series against the nation's 11th ranked team beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at Clark-LeClair Stadium. The first game of the two-game set will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, with game two immediately following that. GW will also play Sunday at 1 p.m. from Greenville, N.C.
NEW FACES AND OLD FRIENDS
George Washington baseball's 2023 roster features a mixture of returners from last year's 22-win team, as well as several new names. The official breakdown consists of 13 returning players and 18 newcomers, including eight transfers and 10 first-year players.
Some familiar faces include shortstop Steve Ditomaso, who racked up a team-high 71 hits last season, second baseman and 2021 All-Atlantic 10 Second Team selection Noah Levin, pitcher Logan Koester and utilityman Ty Acker, who were both named to the 2022 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team.
As for the newcomers, head coach Gregg Ritchie had this to say: "This incoming class brings size, athleticism, and versatility to our already exceptional and accomplished group of returners. It is a group that fills the team's immediate needs and sets up the future success of the program. All these young men bring with them a competitor's and champion's mindset."
CHASING HISTORY IN 2023
When the Colonials take the field on Friday evening, it will officially mark the start of the 11th season for Head Coach Gregg Ritchie. This year, the former player turned head coach will look to make history by taking the title of winningest manager in program history.
Ritchie begins the 2023 campaign with 251 career victories, which is just 24 wins shy of Tom Walter's all-time mark of 275 wins. During Ritchie's previous 10 seasons, he has won at least 24 games in a season seven times.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES:
The Buff & Blue will meet one of the premier teams in the country this weekend when they take on #11 East Carolina. The Pirates enter this weekend's series as the preseason favorites in the American Athletic Conference, having received seven out of eight first place votes. They will also feature the AAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Carter Spivey, and AAC Preseason All-Conference First Team selection, outfielder Jacob Jenkins-Cowart.
Spivey, who the Colonials will face on Friday evening, was sparkling in 2022. The senior compiled an 8-0 record and a 2.83 earned run average in 76.1 innings. Additionally, he struck out 76 batters against just 19 walks.
