Cohen spins gem in opener, offense scores 14 in victory
ARLINGTON, Va. - GW baseball got a sterling pitching performance from Harrison Cohen in the opening game of Saturday's twin-bill with Saint Louis before erupting for 14 runs in the back end to earn a split. Saint Louis (14-24, 4-3) took the opener in extra innings, 7-2, before the Colonials (19-11, 8-3) responded with a 14-7 thumping to assure themselves of no worse than a series split.
Multiple members of the Buff & Blue had big days at the dish, none more so than Steve DiTomaso, who collected four hits including a triple, scored two runs and drove in five. Dom Boselli had five hits across the two games with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Cade Fergus, Noah Levin, Tyler Hix and Anthony Frechette each drove in a pair of runs on the day.
Saint Louis 7, GW 2 (8): One of the finest pitching duels in recent memory took place between the Colonials' Harrison Cohen and SLU's Trevor Harris in the opener. Neither pitcher flinched in the scheduled seven-inning affair, forcing the game into extra innings scoreless.
Cohen allowed only two hits in the first seven innings, facing the minimum through the first five frames before working around two baserunners in the sixth and one more in the seventh. GW couldn't do much more against Harris, recording five hits but going 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
Each team had a runner on second base to start the extra inning and SLU cracked the egg against Cohen in the eighth with a two-run homer. A walk ended his day before the Billikens busted out for five more runs as part of a seven-run frame.
GW scored twice in the bottom half on a Fergus sac fly and Boselli RBI single, but it wasn't enough against Harris, who earned the complete-game victory.
Cohen matched a career high with nine strikeouts in 7.1 innings, suffering a tough-luck loss by allowing three runs (two earned) on just three hits.
GW 14, Saint Louis 7 (7): The Buff & Blue wasted no time getting the offense going in the second game, scoring two in the first inning on a Levin sac fly and Boselli RBI single, knocking Billiken starter Scott Youngbrandt out of the game after just four batters.
SLU tied the game against Jaret Edwards in the top of the fourth, but the Colonials came right back with three runs in the home half. Frechette put GW back in front with a two-out bloop single to right and scored along with Fergus on a two-run single from DiTomaso.
GW then blew things wide open with a nine-run fifth inning that saw the first eight Colonials reach base safely. Hix started the rally with a two-run single, and DiTomaso provided the big blow with a three-run triple into the right field corner.
Edwards earned the win by allowing just two runs on three hits in four innings. Keagan McGinnis was impressive in relief with four strikeouts in 1.2 frames.
Remaining in first place in the A-10 South, GW will go for its third straight A-10 series victory on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the set. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
