Colonials look for third straight A-10 series victory
WASHINGTON - Sitting atop the A-10 South Division, GW baseball welcomes Saint Louis to Tucker Field at Barcroft Park for the first time since 2015. The two teams will open the series on Friday at 3 p.m. followed by a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a 12 p.m. single game on Sunday.
A LOOK AT THE A-10: Off to its best A-10 start since 2018 (6-2), GW holds a one-game lead over VCU (5-3) and Saint Louis (3-1) entering the weekend. The Colonials are tied for the best win percentage in the league with SLU, Fordham (6-2) and La Salle (9-3), the latter two of which are tied for the top spot in the North Division.
HOLDING IN CHECK: GW's April success has been predicated on its pitching staff, which continues to hold a 3.00 ERA in the last 10 games. The Colonials have not given up more than five runs in a game since April 9 and are allowing just 3.4 runs per game in that span. In eight A-10 games, GW has outscored VCU and Davidson, 60-38.
COMING IN CLUTCH: Steve DiTomaso's two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning on Wednesday gave GW its second win this season when trailing after seven innings. The Buff & Blue also improved to 5-2 in one-run games this year with four of the triumphs coming in the last nine contests.
ABOUT THE BILLIKENS: Saint Louis enters the weekend at 13-22 overall, but 3-1 in conference play with its lone series coming at George Mason. The Billikens have had consecutive series against Richmond and Dayton postponed due to COVID-19 protocols.
On the field, SLU is eighth in the league in both hitting at .263 and pitching with a 5.70 ERA. Jake Garella (.313) and Cam Redding (.310) are the team's top threats at the plate, combining for 29 extra base hits and 54 RBI. Colten Schild (.308) and Kyle Fitzgerald (.303) also own averages north of .300.
GW is 9-18 against Saint Louis all-time, but the two teams have not met since 2018 when the Billikens took two of three to finish out the regular season.
