GW looks for fifth straight win in mid-week action
WASHINGTON - Off to its best start since 2016, GW baseball aims to run its win streak to five in a row on Wednesday with a matinee against Coppin State. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
Fan attendance at Barcroft Park is prohibited this season as part of the waiver granted by the District of Columbia to GW to host Athletics events this year.
OVER THE WEEKEND: GW swept a four-game series for the first time since 1996, taking a pair of doubleheaders against Lehigh on Saturday and Sunday. Noah Levin was named the A-10 Player of the Week for his efforts, leading the team by slashing .471/.571/.706 in the first five games of the season, going 8-for-17 with a double, home run, four runs scored, and five RBI.
ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST: Colonial pitchers struck out double-digit batters in each of the four games against Lehigh with punchouts accounting for 51 of a possible 96 outs in the series. GW's staff leads the A-10, and ranks eighth nationally, averaging 13.1 strikeouts per nine innings. The Buff & Blue are also tops in the circuit in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 2.32.
RECORD START: GW is 4-1 for the first time since 2016 and is looking for its first 5-1 start under ninth-year head coach Gregg Ritchie. The Buff & Blue have not started 5-1 since 2008. GW is looking for its first five-game winning streak since March 10-16, 2019.
ABOUT THE EAGLES: Coppin State is 2-6 on the season following a four-game series split with Mount St. Mary's over the weekend. The Eagles, whom the Colonials are a perfect 36-0 against all-time, are paced by Darren Hagan offensively, who is second in the MEAC in batting average at .379. Nick Morales chips in at .353 for a team that hits .246 overall and holds a 6.43 team ERA.

John Castleberry served as the first full-time head coach of the Colonials for seven seasons, compiling an overall mark of 185-158-3. His 1989 squad won the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Northeast Regional tournament, helping him earn Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors. During his tenure he coached 17 student-athletes who went on to professional baseball, including a pair of All-Americans.
