Colonials and River Hawks to meet for first time in program history
***FRIDAY'S SERIES OPENER HAS BEEN MOVED UP TO 10:30 A.M. TO AVOID IMPENDING INCLEMENT WEATHER***
WASHINGTON - After a mid-week postponement, GW baseball is back at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park to continue its lengthy homestand, welcoming UMass Lowell to town for a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. with games at 1 p.m. Saturday and noon on Sunday. Saturday's contest will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Stay tuned to GWsports.com and @GWBaseball1Â on Twitter for potential schedule changes due to inclement weather.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW took two of three from Manhattan last weekend, sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday before falling in Sunday's series finale. The Colonials racked up 33 runs in the three games led by junior Nate Fassnacht, who hit .611 (11-for-18) with four doubles, a triple, six runs scored and six RBI. Sophomore Tyler Hix drove in nine runs in the set, including seven in Saturday's nightcap.
A-10 WEEKLY HONORS:Â Fassnacht and first-year Cade Fergus were honored by the conference on Monday, earning Player of the Week and co-Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.
DUCKS ON THE POND:Â Hix's seven-RBI day marked his second game this season with at least six RBI. He now has five multi-RBI game after driving in two more on Sunday. The sophomore transfer from Alvin, Texas is second in the nation with his 24 RBI, eight more than anyone else in the A-10. His six doubles are tied for 25th nationally, one behind Fassnacht who is tied for third in the NCAA with seven two-baggers.
OFFENSE ROLLING EARLY:Â GW's 18-run outburst in Saturday's second game was just the second-highest total of the year, short of the 20 scored in the opener against Saint Peter's. The Buff & Blue's 8.7 runs per game ranks 13th in the NCAA and tops in the A-10. The production is impressive considering the Colonials are consistently using five or six newcomers in the starting lineup.
ABOUT THE RIVER HAWKS:Â UMass Lowell is 0-10 on the campaign, but has faced a daunting schedule with four games at Arizona, three games at #9 Georgia and three contests last weekend at #5 North Carolina. The River Hawks are hitting .207 as a team so far with Cam Climo pacing the team with a .333 average, two home runs and eight RBI. On the mound, three relievers - Blaise Scalfani, Gerry Siracusa and Joshua Becker all sport sub-4.00 ERAs.
