Colonials set new season-high in hits, but see rally fall short
The Colonials belted four home runs as part of a 19-hit attack, setting a new single-game high for homers in the Gregg Ritchie era (since 2013). The 19 hits were also a new season-high as nine different players notched at least one knock.
Senior Dom D'Alessandro led the attack with a four-hit day that included a pair of home runs, his first career multi-homer game. D'Alessandro scored twice and drove in five. Sophomore Tyler Hix also collected a four-hit day, finishing a triple shy of the cycle while scoring three runs and driving in one.
Junior Nate Fassnacht was 2-for-3 and provided the fourth home run with a two-run shot. First-year Cade Fergus and junior Steve Barmakian also had multi-hit games while first-year Anthony Frechette notched two RBIs.
GW found itself trailing 5-0 after an inning and a half thanks to five two-out runs scored by the Retrievers in the first two innings. The Colonials then whittled away at the deficit with RBIs from Barmkian and Frechette in the second and solo dingers from D'Alessandro and Hix in the third to make it 5-4.
UMBC responded with three runs in the fourth that GW countered with Fassnacht's two-run blast. Another three tallies made it 11-6 UMBC at the half-way point, but Frechette drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the fifth and D'Alessandro launched his second blast of the day in the sixth, a two-run shot, to make it 11-9.
The Retrievers hit a solo homer of their own in the top of the seventh to make it 12-9 before GW finally evened things at 12 in the home half on an RBI single from Fergus and a two-out, two-run single from D'Alessandro.
UMBC quickly retook the lead in the top of the eighth on a two-out, two-run single of its own and would not relinquish the advantage. GW scored in every inning from the second through the seventh, but was unable to push anything across in the eighth or ninth to fall for the first time in its last five mid-week affairs.
The Colonials wrap up a home-heavy March slate with an A-10 series this weekend against Saint Joseph's. The highlight of the weekend is Saturday's Buff, Blue & BBQ pregame tailgate scheduled for 12 p.m. prior to the 1 p.m. first pitch. Registration is free for all baseball alumni.
Friday's series opener is set for 3 p.m. with Sunday's finale a 12 p.m. first pitch. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
