Colonials unable to overcome pair of two-run home runs
ARLINGTON, Va. -Â GW baseball jumped out to an early lead in Friday's series opener with Saint Joseph's at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park, but a pair of long balls from the visitors proved to be the difference with the Hawks coming away with a 4-2 triumph.
The Colonials came out swinging, registering four singles in the first five hitters in the bottom of the first, culminating in a two-run base knock from sophomore Tyler Hix to grab an early 2-0 lead.
From there, though, GW's bats were held in check by Hawks starter Jordan DiValerio. The righthander ceded only two hits the remainder of the way in his 8.0-inning start. The Colonials brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning following a double from Dom D'Alessandro, but were unable to get any closer.
Saint Joseph's tied the game at two with a two-run homer in the second inning and ultimately took the lead with a two-run shot in the top of the eighth inning.Â
Junior Elliott Raimo pitched well in a no-decision for GW, allowing two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings, striking out three.
The two sides go at it again on Saturday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The Buff, Blue and BBQ pregame tailgate precedes the contest with festivities beginning at 12 p.m.
