Fassnacht drives in four as Colonials force rubber game
ARLINGTON, Va. -Â Junior Nate Fassnacht drove in four runs and GW's offense returned to its typical form, leading the Colonials to a 10-4 victory over Saint Joseph's on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
The win sets up a second straight rubber game for GW to open A-10 play, with first pitch Sunday scheduled for 12 p.m.
Similar to Friday's series opener, the Colonials came out hot with three runs in the home half of the first, this time overcoming an early 1-0 deficit. First-year Noah Levin put the Buff & Blue ahead with a two-run single before coming in to score on an RBI single from redshirt freshman Derek Ripp.
GW added on in the second with Fassnacht igniting his strong day with a two-run single to make it 5-1. Fassnacht tripled home first-year Cade Fergus in the bottom of the fourth to push the advantage to 6-1.
SJU got back in the game with three runs in the top of the sixth, but the Colonials immediately responded with four runs in the bottom half to put the game on ice. Two Hawk errors aided the cause with two unearned runs, while Fassnacht added his fourth RBI with a single. The final run plated via a double play groundout up the middle.
Fassnacht was 3-for-5 with two runs scored on the day, joining junior Steve Barmakian with a three-hit game. Barmakian was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored. Fergus scored four runs, thanks in part to three walks at the top of the order.
Redshirt senior Brady Renner earned the win for GW, allowing four runs on just four hits in 5.1 innings while tying a season-best with six strikeouts.
