Fassnacht launches pair of home runs, drives in four
The Colonials led by as many as six in the contest, but three costly errors in the final two frames allowed Saint Joseph's to score nine unanswered runs in the comeback victory that handed the Hawks the series win as well.
After falling behind 2-0 in the second inning, GW quickly evened the game with a back-to-back two-out hits from first-years Logan Doran and Anthoney Frechette. SJU moved back ahead 3-2 an inning later, but the Colonials responded with five runs in the home half to take a 7-3 lead.
Junior Nate Fassnacht ignited the frame with a mammoth two-run homer to give the Colonials their first lead at 4-3. First-year Noah Levin, Doran and Frechette all provided RBIs later in the frame to push the lead to four.
After another Hawk run in the fourth, the Colonials added on with Fassnacht's second two-run homer in as many innings, then reached double figures on a Levin single that made it 10-4.
The Hawks closed to within 10-8 on a pair of homers from Andrew Cossetti, but GW regained its three-run cushion with a two-out single in the last of the sixth from sophomore Colin Brophy. The teams exchanged runs in the seventh with the Colonials scoring a run on a double play.
Leading 12-9, GW appeared to be out of the eighth inning, but a costly throwing error extended the frame for the Hawks, who took advantage with a two-run single and a three-run homer sandwiched around another error to retake the lead at 15-12. A one-out error in the ninth, combined with three walks and two hit batters, plated three more unearned runs as the visitors scored the final nine runs of the game to pull out the win.
Four Colonials registered multi-hit games, led by Fassnacht's 3-for-5 day with two homers and four RBI. Sophomore Tyler Hix was 3-for-5, scoring three runs and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Doran also had three hits, scoring twice and plating two. Junior Steve Barmakian had a multi-hit day with two knocks and three runs.
GW now embarks on a five-game road trip that begins on Wednesday at Towson. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
