GW kicks off five-game road swing to begin April
WASHINGTON -Â After a month of home games in March, GW baseball begins a road-heavy April schedule with the opening of a five-game road trip on Wednesday at Towson. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
OVER THE WEEKEND:Â GW dropped two of three to Saint Joseph's at Barcroft Park, snagging a victory in Saturday's middle game, 10-4. Despite the series setback, the Colonials still hit .317 as a team, led by three players hitting over .400 - Steve Barmakian (.545), Tyler Hix (.462) and Nate Fassnacht (.429).
The trio had six hits each with Hix and Fassnacht each collecting three extra-base hits. Fassnacht became the second Colonial this year to hit two home runs in the same game on Sunday.
HALFWAY THERE: GW has reached the midway point of the regular season on pace for a third straight 30-win season, and fourth in seven years, under head coach Gregg Ritchie. The first half was loaded with home games, though, with 24 of 27 played at the Tuck. Of the final 28 scheduled contests, only nine will be played at the friendly confines.
PEPPERING THE CHARTS:Â The Colonials are still one of the most potent offense in the nation, ranking in the top 15 in the NCAA in numerous offensive categories:Â triples (13, 8th), runs per game (8.1, 10th), hits (302, 11th), runs (220, 12th), average (.306, 13th), doubles (62, 14th) and OBP (.407, 15th).
Individually, Fassnacht is tied for the national lead with 15 doubles and in the top 10 in runs (37, 5th), toughest to strikeout (18.0 AB/K, 6th), triples (4, 7th), total bases (83, 7th) and hits (45, 8th).
ABOUT THE TIGERS:Â GW and Towson square off for the second time this season following a 13-8 win for the Colonials on March 12. The Buff & Blue pounded out eight extra-base hits in the game with three-run homers from Cade Fergus and Dom D'Alessandro.
The Tigers are 3-22 on the campaign and have dropped 10 straight, including a three-game sweep at the hands of Florida Gulf Coast last weekend. Javon Fields leads the team with a .289 average and eight extra-base hits.
GW is looking for its second straight season sweep of the Tigers, and leads the all-time series 40-9-2.
