Colonials score go-ahead run in the eighth for second road victory
TOWSON, Md. -Â Junior Nate Fassnacht launched a pair of home runs for the second straight game, but it was a late unearned run that pushed GW baseball over Towson, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
Coming off a two-homer game on Sunday against Saint Joseph's, Fassnacht continued his phenomenal junior campaign with two more long balls on Wednesday, increasing his team-leading total to seven on the year.Â
The first dinger, a two-run shot in the top of the third, was a low liner the other way that sliced just inside the foul pole. He then led off the sixth with a no-doubt solo shot to left field, increasing the Colonials' advantage to 3-1.
Fassnacht added a single for good measure in his final at-bat, finishing the day 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and three RBI, bringing his team-best total to 33 in 28 games.Â
Towson tied the game with a pair of two-out singles in the last of the seventh, but senior Pat Knight was able to keep the game square, stranding the bases loaded with a flyout to left.
GW immediately responded in the eighth as first-year Cade Fergus reached on an error, moved up to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Steve Barmakian.Â
Sophomore Kevin Sylvestri worked around a leadoff walk in the eighth, utilizing a pair of groundouts to strand the runner, before giving way to junior Jaret Edwards, who locked down his first save of the year with a six-pitch, 1-2-3 ninth inning.
First-year Rich Pfluger got the start and pitched well for the Buff & Blue, yielding only an unearned run in 5.0 innings of work. The southpaw allowed three hits, struck our four and walked one.
The Colonials head back into A-10 play this weekend with a trip to Fairfax, Va. to take on George Mason. The series starts on Friday at 3 p.m. with a 2 p.m. first pitch on Saturday and a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
