Colonials overwhelm Patriots in series opener, rack up 10 extra-base hits
FAIRFAX, Va. -Â GW baseball got off to a great start in its first A-10 road game of the season before ending up with a doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon against George Mason.
The Colonials scored in their first four-at bats of the opener to walk away with an emphatic 16-7 victory before the Patriots responded with a 13-2 win in the nightcap. The teams will square off in the rubber game on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
GW 16, George Mason 7:Â The Colonials rolled in the series opener, pounding out 18 hits, 10 of which went for extra bases. The top seven players in the GW lineup all collected multi-hit days, led by senior Dom D'Alessandro, who belted a pair of homers as part of a five-RBI day.
The two long balls marked the second multi-homer game of the season for D'Alessandro, who also accomplished the feat on March 26 against UMBC. It also was the third straight game a Colonial has hit two home runs.
Alongside D'Alessandro, first-year Cade Fergus and junior Nate Fassnacht had three hits each, while junior Steve Barmakian, sophomore Tyler Hix and first-years Noah Levin and Logan Doran had two knocks a piece.
All three of Fergus' hits went for extra bases with two doubles and a homer. Barmakian racked up a double and a triple, as did Hix.
The Buff & Blue jumped out to a 2-0 lead three batters in with an RBI triple from Barmakian and an RBI double from Fassnacht. After a Mason solo homer in the home half of the first, the Colonials ripped off seven straight runs to open up a 9-1 lead on D'Alessandro's first dinger of the day in the fourth inning.
A second solo homer briefly stalled the momentum, but a four-run sixth and a four-run eighth, capped by D'Alessandro's second long ball, pushed the Colonials out in front by double digits.
Junior Elliott Raimo started and allowed two runs on five hits in 4.0 innings for the Colonials in a no-decision. Senior Pat Knight was credited with the win, striking out five batters in 2.0 innings of relief.
George Mason 13, GW 2:Â The Patriots returned the favor in the nightcap, opening up the game early with a six-run bottom of the second inning.
The Colonials only runs came in the top of the fourth when Hix reached on a run-scoring fielding error and Levin added a sacrifice fly.
Mason quickly responded with five runs, four of which were unearned, in the bottom of the fourth to expand the lead.
D'Alessandro had both of GW's hits in the nightcap, finishing the day a combined 5-for-7 with five runs scored and five RBI.
