Colonials claim first A-10 series victory of the campaign
FAIRFAX, Va. -Â GW baseball bolted out of the gates with six runs in the first inning and cruised to an 8-5 victory over George Mason on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Park. The win also secured the series for the Buff & Blue, the first of the conference season.
The Colonials wasted no time getting started, taking a 1-0 lead three batters in on a double from junior Nate Fassnacht that scored first-year Cade Fergus, who led the game off with his own two-bagger. Fassnacht promptly scored on a single from senior Dom D'Alessandro to make it 2-0.
A bases-loaded walk plated the third run of the opening frame prior to sophomore Trevor Kuncl driving in a pair with a single to make it 5-0. Fergus, batting for the second time in the frame, capped off the inning with an RBI single to give senior Nate Woods plenty of cushion in his return from injury.
Woods, making his first start since March 2 against Manhattan, looked like his typical self with three scoreless innings in a no-decision. The righthander allowed two hits, walked two and struck out three.
Junior Jaret Edwards earned the win in relief, lasting 4.1 innings.
GW added on in the fourth with a run-scoring foulout from Fassnacht to push the advantage to 7-0. Doran reached on a fielder's choice that scored D'Alessandro in the seventh for the eighth run of the day.
Mason made things interesting with three runs in the home half of the eighth, but junior Keagan McGinnis entered to calm things down, earning the save with 1.2 scoreless innings.
The Colonials have a pair of mid-week matchups this week, traveling to UMBC on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before hosting William & Mary on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
