D'Alessandro and Fassnacht collect four hits each
GW's potent offense showcased what has become a standard onslaught with 17 hits, eight of which came from senior Dom D'Alessandro and junior Nate Fassnacht. D'Alessandro reached base in all six plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with two walks, a run scored and two RBI. Fassnacht was 4-for-6, launching his team-best eighth long ball of the year, scoring three times and driving in three.
Redshirt freshman Derek Ripp had one of his best performances of the year, recording three doubles in a 3-for-5 day with a run scored and two RBI. Sophomore Tyler Hix added a pair of hits, driving in three.
The Colonials fell behind on a solo homer in the second inning, but quickly came back to take a 2-1 lead on a Fassnacht single and a bases-loaded walk to first-year Logan Doran in the top of the third. The Retrievers countered with two runs in the fifth to move back ahead, 3-2, but were unable to hold off the GW attack.
The Buff & Blue took the lead for good with four runs in the sixth inning, starting the rally with a game-tying RBI double from first-year Anthony Frechette. Later in the frame, Fassnacht began a string of three straight two-out, run-scoring singles with D'Alessandro and Hix to put GW in front, 6-3.
Fassnacht homered in the eighth for his fourth hit of the day with Ripp adding on two more runs via his third double of the night, making it 9-4 GW. UMBC countered with two runs of its own, but Hix responded in the top of the ninth with a two-run single to account for the final margin.
First-year Rich Pfluger was solid in the start for GW, allowing three runs on six hits in 5.0 winnings with six strikeouts. Sophomore Kevin Sylvestri earned the win in relief, striking out three in 1.2 frames.
The Colonials are right back in action on Wednesday, hosting William & Mary at 3 p.m. at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
